Introduction

SUPER-UX NETWORK PROGRAMMER'S GUIDE

The SUPER-UX Network Programmer's Guide describes the application interfaces for communication programs on the SUPER-UX operating system. This guide corresponds to SUPER-UX Release 9.2 and describes the functions of the SUPER-UX System V R3 and SUPER-UX Extended.

The SUPER-UX Network Programmer's Guide is organized into the following chapters:

• Chapter 1, Introduction, describes the International Standards Organization (ISO) seven-layer model and how the SUPER-UX protocol structure fits the model.
• Chapter 2, Socket Interface, presents the socket system call interface in an interprocess communication tutorial. This chapter is divided into an introductory and advanced tutorial.
• Chapter 3, Transport Interface (TLI), gives a high-level overview of the Transport Interface, which supports data transfer between processes.
• Chapter 4, Remote Procedure Calls (RPC), describes remote procedure call mechanisms, protocols, and RPC programming tools.
• Chapter 5, eXternal Data Representation (XDR), describes the specification for the portable data transmission standard. This includes library routines that allow a C programmer to describe arbitrary data structures in a machine-independent fashion.
• Chapter 6, RPCGEN, provides information about the protocol compiler and C-like language useful in writing RPC applications and defining network data.

CONVENTIONS

The following conventions are used throughout this document.

• Commands, programs, flags, keywords, function names, and options are printed in boldface type.
• Variable information is printed in italics. For example, in the following command string, filename is variable information.

pr /usr/filename 

• Text strings enclosed in brackets are optional. In the following example, options may or may not be included after the command.

grep [options] 

• File names, paths, and directories remain as standard text.
