Introduction

This SX-4 Series General Description presents an overview of the NEC SX-4 series supercomputer.

This manual is organized as follows:

• Chapter 1, Developmental Background, describes the developmental philosophy and features of the SX-4 supercomputer.

• Chapter 2, Overview of the SX-4 Series, describes the overview of the hardware and software of the SX-4 series supercomputer.

• Chapter 3, SUPER-UX Operating System, describes SUPER-UX, which is the operating system of the SX-4 series supercomputer

• Chapter 4, Software Development Support, describes the FORTRAN compilers (FORTRAN90/SX, FORTRAN77/SX), tools for performance enhancement and debugging, and the tool to convert FORTRAN programs (C/SX) for using the SX-4 series supercomputer.

• Chapter 5, Application Software, describes the application software developed for scientific and engineering fields for using the SX-4 series supercomputer.

• Chapter 6, Hardware, summarizes the system unit and peripheral devices that comprise the hardware of the SX-4 series supercomputer.

• Appendix A, SX-4 Series Specification, lists the specifications of each model of the SX-4 series supercomputer.
